Nikolaos Scarmeas, MD, MSc is a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of CogniBiome Therapeutics, Inc.. Professor of Neurology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School and maintains an academic appointment at Columbia University in New York. After earning his medical degree in Athens, he completed his neurology residency, fellowship training in aging and dementia, and a Master’s degree in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Columbia University.
Dr. Scarmeas is an internationally recognized expert in cognitive reserve, healthy brain aging, Alzheimer's disease, and nutritional neuroscience. His pioneering research has demonstrated how education, intellectually engaging lifestyles, physical activity, and dietary patterns—particularly the Mediterranean diet—can enhance cognitive resilience, reduce dementia risk, and slow cognitive decline.
Dr. Scarmeas has extensively investigated the clinical and biological mechanisms linking diet and brain health, including work on the role of the gut microbiome as it relates. He has served as Principal Investigator on studies funded by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association and has authored numerous influential scientific publications in leading international journals.
